Dental products for dogs in Canada come in four main forms: sprays, gels, water additives and powders you sprinkle on food. They differ in what they contain, how often you use them and whether they carry the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) seal. The table below sets out what each brand publishes about its own product, so you can compare them side by side.

We are Trueleaf Petcare, and our Healthy Mouth Dental Spray and Healthy Teeth Dental Gel are in the table. Every row is limited to what the brand or a Canadian retailer publishes, and the brands are listed in alphabetical order.

What does the VOHC seal mean?

The Veterinary Oral Health Council is part of the American Veterinary Dental College. A company sends the VOHC its own study results, and the VOHC checks them against set standards for controlling plaque, tartar or both. The VOHC does not test products itself. The seal tells you a product met that standard for the claim on the pack. It does not tell you how a product without the seal performs, because many companies never apply.

Is brushing still better than a spray or gel?

Yes. The American Veterinary Dental College calls daily brushing the gold standard, and the AVMA calls it the single most effective thing you can do at home. The Merck Veterinary Manual and VCA Animal Hospitals say the same. None of these sources say a spray, gel or water additive replaces brushing.

  • Gels work best with a brush or a finger, because the rubbing is what lifts plaque.
  • Sprays are quick and suit dogs that will not tolerate a brush, or days you cannot brush.
  • Water additives and powders need no handling at all, which is why many owners start there. The AVMA notes that not all of them are effective, so ask your vet.

If your dog will not let you near their mouth, our guide to dental care for a dog who will not let you brush walks through a routine that works up to it.

What does the research say about oil of oregano for dogs' teeth?

Our dental spray and gel are built on Mediterranean oil of oregano, so we checked. Oregano oil and its main compound, carvacrol, have shown activity against bacteria in lab studies. We found no controlled study in dogs that tests oregano oil for plaque, tartar or gum health, and no oregano-based product holds the VOHC seal. The fair summary is that it is plausible from lab work and not yet tested in dogs. Use it as part of a routine that includes brushing.

When should you see a vet about your dog's teeth?

The AVMA and the Merck Veterinary Manual list these signs:

  • Bad breath that does not go away
  • Red, purple or bleeding gums
  • Broken or loose teeth
  • Drooling, pawing at the mouth, chewing on one side or dropping food

The American Veterinary Dental College also notes that white teeth do not mean a dog is free of dental disease, because much of it sits below the gum line. No home product replaces a dental check.

Where does Trueleaf fit?

Trueleaf Petcare is a Vernon, BC company that makes veterinarian-formulated products for dogs and cats. Our two dental products are made to work together, and both are built on Mediterranean oil of oregano with peppermint oil.

  • Healthy Mouth Dental Spray is one spray onto the teeth once a day, best before bed. It suits dogs that will not accept a brush.
  • Healthy Teeth Dental Gel is applied with a toothbrush or finger. It is made to stick to the teeth so brushing works better.

Both help support overall oral hygiene, and neither needs rinsing. The Oral Care Bundle is the two together.

Common questions

Can I use a dental spray and a water additive at the same time?

Check both labels and ask your vet first. Many products are made to be used on their own, and combining two does not mean twice the result.

Are dog dental products safe for cats?

Not always. Use a product labelled for cats. Our dental spray and gel are made for dogs.

How long before I notice fresher breath?

It depends on the product and on how much tartar is already there. Products work on plaque, the soft layer. Hard tartar usually needs a professional cleaning before home care can keep up.

Do I still need a professional dental cleaning?

Usually, yes. Home care slows the build-up between cleanings. Your vet will tell you how often your dog needs one.
