Hairball and calming supplements for cats come in very different forms in Canada: soft chews, crunchy bites, chewable tablets and lubricant gels. Some are dosed by weight and some are the same for every cat, and only a few are made in Canada. The tables below set out what each brand publishes about its own product, so you can compare them side by side.
We are Trueleaf Petcare, and our Hairball Support and Calming Support chews for cats are in the tables. Every row is limited to what the brand or a Canadian retailer publishes, and the brands are listed in alphabetical order.

How do hairball products work?
- Fibre products, such as psyllium, cellulose or pumpkin, help hair move through the gut with the rest of the meal. Most chews and bites work this way.
- Lubricant gels, such as petroleum and mineral oil gels, coat the hair so it passes more easily. The Cornell Feline Health Center advises never giving a laxative without your veterinarian's approval.
- Brushing removes loose hair before your cat swallows it. Cornell and VCA both name daily brushing as one of the most useful things you can do.
When is a hairball a reason to see the vet?
The Cornell Feline Health Center says a hairball every week or two is generally nothing to worry about. See a veterinarian without delay if your cat is lethargic, refuses food for more than a day or two, or retches or vomits repeatedly without bringing anything up. VCA notes that frequent vomiting can point to other conditions that need a vet, so do not assume it is hair.
What about calming supplements for cats?
VCA says L-theanine, alpha-casozepine and tryptophan show some promise for cats, but the studies are small and there is no standard testing requirement for these products. International Cat Care advises that a sudden change in behaviour can be a sign of illness or pain, so a vet visit comes first. A calming chew works best alongside the basics: hiding places, high perches, a predictable routine and separate food, water and litter.
Why a cat supplement should be made for cats
Cats are not small dogs. They have different tastes, smaller daily amounts and different sensitivities, and some ingredients that suit dogs do not suit cats. Look for a product labelled for cats, dosed by your cat's weight, in a format your cat will actually eat. Our guide cat supplements are not small dog supplements explains why.
Where does Trueleaf fit?
Trueleaf Petcare is a Vernon, BC company that makes veterinarian-formulated soft chews for dogs and cats in its own human-grade facility. Our cat chews are separate formulas made for cats, not smaller doses of our dog chews, and each 50 g bag holds 100 small chews.
- Hairball Support combines natural fibre with a base of omega oils and antioxidants to help support normal digestion and hairball elimination. A 10 lb cat takes 4 chews a day, so a bag lasts 25 days.
- Calming Support combines L-theanine and lemon balm with hemp seed oil to support calm behaviour. A 10 lb cat takes 2 chews a day, so a bag lasts 50 days.
- Senior Support is a blend for older cats that helps support normal joint function and mobility.
The dosing chart lists every weight, and our guide on how much to give a cat explains the bands. Both hairball and calming chews contain fish.
Common questions
How often can I give my cat a hairball supplement?
Follow the label. Daily chews such as ours are given every day. Lubricant gels are usually given for a few days and then a few times a week. Do not combine two hairball products without asking your vet.
Will my cat eat a soft chew?
Many cats take soft chews as a treat. If yours will not, try crumbling the chew over wet food, or choose a different format.
Can I give my cat a dog supplement?
No. Use a product labelled for cats. Dog products are dosed for dogs and can contain ingredients or amounts that are not right for cats.
