To work out what a pet supplement costs per day, find the daily amount for your pet's weight on the label, work out how many days the container lasts at that amount, and divide the price by the number of days. For example, a $58.99 bag of 200 chews given at 4 chews a day lasts 50 days, which is $1.18 a day. The shelf price tells you what you pay today. The cost per day tells you what the product costs to give.
Below is the method in three steps, followed by worked examples using Trueleaf products for dogs of 20 lb, 40 lb and 60 lb, and a cat. All prices are in Canadian dollars and were checked on September 30, 2026. Shipping and tax are not included.
How do you work out the cost per day of a pet supplement?
- Find the daily amount for your pet's weight. Look for the dosing table on the label or the brand's website. It is usually set out in weight bands, so find the band your pet falls into. Note the unit: chews, tablets, scoops, grams or millilitres.
- Count the units in the container. The label gives the count (200 chews), the weight (600g) or the volume (237 mL). Use the count when there is one. For a liquid, use the volume.
- Divide. Units in the container divided by units per day gives the number of days. Price divided by days gives the cost per day.
As a single line: cost per day = price ÷ (units in the container ÷ units per day).
Another way to get the same number is to work out the cost of one unit first, then multiply by the units per day. A $58.99 bag of 200 chews is about $0.29 a chew, and 4 chews a day is $1.18.
A note on rounding: our dosing chart shows how long each bag or bottle lasts in whole days, rounded down. In the tables below we use the exact figure, such as 16.5 days, so the cost per day is accurate to the cent.

What do Trueleaf Hip + Joint Support Chews cost per day?
Hip + Joint Support Chews are dosed at one chew per 8 lb a day, also split between morning and evening. On the bag, a 20 lb dog takes 2.5 chews, a 40 lb dog takes 5 and a 60 lb dog takes 7.5. For the first 10 days the bag says to give twice the daily amount, so the first bag runs out sooner. The bags and prices are the same as Calming Support, but the daily count is higher, so each bag lasts fewer days.

| Product, 10 lb cat | Chews per day | Arithmetic | Days | Cost per day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Calming Support, one 50g bag, $9.99 | 2 | 100 ÷ 2 = 50; $9.99 ÷ 50 | 50 | $0.20 |

| Senior or Hairball Support, one 50g bag, $9.99 | 4 | 100 ÷ 4 = 25; $9.99 ÷ 25 | 25 | $0.40 |
| Senior or Hairball Support, 3-pack, $26.99 | 4 | 300 ÷ 4 = 75; $26.99 ÷ 75 | 75 | $0.36 |
For other cat weights, see our guide on cat supplements and how much to give.
Why do bigger bags cost less per day?
Because the price per chew drops as the bag gets bigger. The daily count stays the same, so a lower price per chew means a lower cost per day.
| Dog chew bag | Price | Chews | Price per chew |
|---|---|---|---|
| 90g | $14.99 | 30 | $0.50 |
| 200g | $24.99 | 66 | $0.38 |
| 600g | $58.99 | 200 | $0.29 |
The bigger the dog, the more this matters. At 60 lb on Hip + Joint Support, the 90g bag costs $3.75 a day and lasts four days. The 600g bag costs $2.21 a day and lasts about 27 days. The 90g bag is still a sensible way to see whether your dog takes to the chew before you buy a larger size.

What should you check besides cost per day?
Cost per day is a fair way to compare containers of different sizes, but it only compares like with like when the daily amounts come from the same kind of label. Before you buy, also check the ingredient panel and the amount of each ingredient per unit. Our guide on how to read a pet supplement label shows where to find them. If you are not sure which product fits your pet, the supplement finder will point you to one.
