The calming chews most often sold for dogs in Canada are Crumps' Naturals, Healthybud, NaturVet Quiet Moments, Nutrience Care, Open Farm, Trueleaf Calming Support, Vet's Best, VetriScience and Zesty Paws. They differ more than the packaging suggests: some are daily supplements and some are given before a stressful event, some print the amount of each ingredient and some do not, and only a few are made in Canada. The table below sets out what each brand publishes about its own product, so you can compare them side by side.

We are Trueleaf Petcare, and our Calming Support Chews are one of the products in the table. Every row is limited to what the brand or a Canadian retailer publishes, and the brands are listed in alphabetical order.

Daily chews or event chews: what is the difference?

This is the first thing to check, because it changes how you use the product and what it costs.

  • Daily chews are given every day as part of a routine. Nutrience Care, Open Farm, Trueleaf, Vet's Best, VetriScience and Zesty Paws are labelled this way.
  • Event chews are given shortly before something you know will unsettle your dog, such as a car ride, a vet visit or fireworks. NaturVet Quiet Moments is labelled to be given 30 minutes before the event, with a limit on how many can be given in 12 hours.
  • Treats with calming ingredients, such as Healthybud, are fed like a treat and usually do not list ingredient amounts.

What should you look for on a calming chew label?

  1. The amount of each ingredient. A label that gives milligrams per chew lets you compare products. A long ingredient list with no amounts does not.
  2. The daily amount for your dog's weight. A chew dosed at 1 per 10 lb and a chew dosed at 1 per 25 lb are very different products, even at the same bag price.
  3. Where it is made. "Made in Canada", "Canadian-owned" and "distributed by" a Canadian company are three different statements. Our guide to Canadian-made dog and cat supplements explains the wording.
  4. Allergens. Many soft chews use fish oil, chicken or duck for flavour. Check the label if your dog has a food sensitivity.
  5. What it costs per day. Divide the price by the number of chews, then multiply by your dog's daily amount. Our cost per day guide walks through it.

What does the evidence say about calming ingredients for dogs?

In short, it is limited, and it is worth knowing that before you buy any brand.

  • L-theanine and alpha-casozepine. VCA Animal Hospitals, writing with board-certified veterinary behaviourists, says early studies suggest L-theanine may have a calming effect and alpha-casozepine has shown some promise. The same page says supplements on their own are rarely enough without behaviour work.
  • Evidence quality. The Merck Veterinary Manual describes the evidence for these ingredients in dogs as somewhat limited. One often-cited L-theanine study in storm-sensitive dogs had no control group, so a placebo effect cannot be ruled out.
  • Melatonin. VCA notes that melatonin use in dogs is off label, and warns that some human melatonin products contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs. Never substitute a human product.

If your dog's behaviour changes suddenly, or fear is getting worse, see your veterinarian first. Pain and illness can look like nervousness, and a behaviour plan does more than any chew.

Where does Trueleaf fit?

Trueleaf Petcare is a Vernon, BC company that makes veterinarian-formulated soft chews for dogs and cats in its own human-grade facility. Calming Support Chews for Dogs are our best-known product. They combine AlphaWave L-theanine, chamomile and lemon balm with a hemp seed oil base, and they are a daily chew: one per 10 lb of body weight, split between morning and evening. During times of increased stress it is okay to double the daily amount, as needed.

A 200-chew bag lasts a 40 lb dog 50 days. The dosing chart lists every weight, and the supplement finder picks the size for your dog.

Common questions

Can I give my dog calming chews every day?

It depends on the product. Some are labelled for daily use and some only for use before a stressful event. Follow the label. Trueleaf Calming Support Chews are labelled for daily use.

How many calming chews can a dog have?

Each brand sets its own amount by weight, and they are not interchangeable. Trueleaf's is one chew per 10 lb a day with no upper limit. NaturVet's event chew sets a maximum in any 12 hours. Never combine two calming products without asking your vet.

How long do calming chews take to work?

Event chews are labelled to be given about 30 minutes before the event. Daily chews are meant to be part of a routine, so give them consistently for a few weeks before judging. Our guide on how much to give and for how long covers this in detail.

Are calming chews safe for puppies?

Many labels set a minimum age or weight. Check the label and ask your veterinarian before giving any supplement to a puppy.
